Fengur's history
Period I: 1991-2001
Fengur was first used in the year 1991 and was operated to the year 2001. That year WorldFengur took it place. Fengur was a comprehensive computer system which managed the recording scheme for the Icelandic horse breeders in Iceland. Fengur operated on a server on the intra net of BI. With Fengur a powerful central database was built for the Icelandic horses. In the year 1991, when Fengur started to operate, information on only 9.000 horses was in the database but in the year 2001 when WorldFengur took the Fengur's place information on almost 150.000 horses were available.
Period II : 1995-1997
PC-Fengur was published (DOS version program) 1995-1997. The program with the whole database was on 20 floppy disks that the buyers had to import on their PC-computers.
Veraldarfengur (World Wide Web Fengur) was opened on the Internet late 1997. In Veraldarfengur information on the breeding evaluation (BLUP) was available included all the basic information on the Icelandic horses.
Period III : 1998-2000
Íslandsfengur was first published 1998. Íslandsfengur was a multimedia version of Fengur in 3 languages; Icelandic, English and German. This version of Fengur was an answer to demands for a Windows-based program instead of a DOS-program. In Íslandsfengur many thousands of photos of the highest judged horses were available.
Period IV : 2001 -
WorldFengur opened at the WC in Austria in August 2001. WorldFengur took the place of all others versions of the Fengur-system i.e. PC-Fengur, Veraldarfengur, Íslandsfengur and the original Fengur from the year 1991 and had served the Icelandic horse community more than 10 years. WorldFengur was an answer to the many requests from the International Icelandic horse community for assistance in developing Fengur for their needs too in the studbook work etc. WorldFengur was however first and foremost developed to be the studbook of origin of the Icelandic horse in the world (mother studbook) according to the Icelandic government regulation No. 948/2002 on the breeding and origin on the Icelandic horse. The WorldFengur project is a joint project of The Farmers Association of Iceland and FEIF. The original objectives were to build a global register of the Icelandic horse, to calculate an International breeding evaluation, to assist the FEIF member organizations in the studbook work and to establish a cooperation between member organizations. Today all the FEIF member organizations are a member of the WorldFengur project with 2-3 exceptions.
