Lesson 1 - Registering an owner

The owner is one of the key data in WorldFengur. Thousands of owners are now registered in the database of WorldFengur. Before registering an owner, it is important to find out whether he/she is already registered to avoid multi-registration of the same owner.

Therefore, you actually start the registration process with a search. You click on Horse Owner in the main menu and then Register. Next you click on the radio button Search by name.

First example

You are going to register a person named Mike Roger. You then enter in the field Name: Mike and click the Search button (It is possible just to type the first letters of the name in the name field). Then WorldFengur will show a record of a Mike Edwards in GB, i.e. the only Mike in the database. Try to fill out as little of the name as possible in the name field, in order to keep the search broad. You then have to look for the name Roger as the name might be registered as Roger Mike. If you type in Mike Roger you will get a blank record with the name Mike Roger as WorldFengur can not find any Mike Roger. If Mike has a middle name you have to be aware of that when you type in the name. If you are sure that Mike Roger is not already in the database you can fill out the rest of the registration form and finally click the Register button.

Second example

You are going to register a person named Anne Barandun. When you type Anne in the name field you will get a list of all persons with the name Anne. If one of them is Anne Barandun you can click on View in the line and change the information if you need to. Please note that you can only change the information if the person is a registered breeder located in your country. Here you have to take care. You also have to type the last name first - Barandun - and search - if the last name is used first (Barandun Anne).

Filling out the form

Recording program: Is the owner taking part in the breeders report program? In Iceland annual reports are sent to all horse breeders that are taking part in the program.

Identification number: Generally you do not have to fill out this field. WorldFengur will take care of it for you! When you have clicked on the Register button you can see the allocated number for this person. If you like to choose a special ID number you can type in the number, as long as it is not in use.

Name, address, postal code, postal name, county, country name: This one is self-explanatory!

E-mail address: When everything is e-something it is always important to fill out this.

Identification number of the representative: In the future it will be possible to choose a representative to handle the data of your horse breeding. This is not actual today so leave this field blank.

Appearance level: Will the owner be visible or invisible in WorldFengur? If marked visible all can see the owner's information, such as what horses he owns etc.

Farm ID number: The ID number of the farm the owner is registered on (owns).

First permanent number, last permanent number: These fields are used only in Iceland. Registrars outside Iceland should leave it blank.

Lesson 2 - The Magic Symbol

When searching for information in WorldFengur we can say that one symbol is a "magic one". The magic symbol is %. For instance if you wish to find all sires born in Iceland that have been marked with a microchip you do the following: Choose the main menu item Horse and the sub menu Search. Type in IS20001 in the field FEIF-ID number. Then you choose Microchip in the options listbox and finally you type in the magic symbol % in the field to the right of the lisbox. The result today (13.10.2001) is a list of 519 horses.

Another example is if you wish to find all farms in one country. You choose the main menu item Horse, the sub menu Basic registration and finally Search for a farm number. Then what? You just type in the magic symbol % in the field Farm, choose the country from the listbox and voilá! WF will find for you all farms in that country.

Summary

We can say that the magic symbol % means: It doesn't matter what data is in this field as long as it is not empty. Find all horses with some data in this field. However please take care when using the magic symbol. You always have to narrow down the search condition when using the symbol otherwise you will get a list of all horses registered in WorldFengur!

Lesson 3 - Search and you will find

WorldFengur's database contains an enormous amount of information. Every day registrars around the world add data to the database. Therefore it is important to be able to search for information using different criteria. To search for information you choose Advanced search in the main menu. It is best to explain the search form with examples.

You have to find a sire frá Hofsstaðaseli born 1985? The father was Hrafn frá Holtsmúla

This is the only information you have. Now you use your common sense to build a search criteria. You need two steps.

First you find the FEIF-ID number of Hrafn frá Holtsmúla. You type Hrafn in the name field and Holtsm in the next field (from). When you click the search button WorldFengur shows you a list of at least 8 horses. The one you like is with the FEIF-ID number IS1968157460.

Secondly you type in this search condition. In the from field: Hofsstaðaseli (or Hofssta). In the Father's FEIF-ID number field: IS1968157460. In the Year of birth field: 1985 and finally in the Gender field: Sire. And there you have filled out a complex search criteria for WorldFengur to search by. And voilá! The result: Hugur IS1985157018 frá Hofsstaðaseli.

Now try to build similar or more complicated search criteria. Send us your best criteria.

Assessment registration

Several issues were considered regarding assessment registrations. Access to the program will vary according to users, i.e. only judges will be able to make changes to assessments.

1. step: Register a show

Choose shows and then register below. Enter the show´s date and the number of the show, which is the serial number of shows during the year in question. If you are not sure which serial number belongs to the show, go back to shows and search. There you can view the year's shows and then take the next available number for that year.
The date is entered in the following manner: YYYY-MM-DD.
The area code is the same number as used in the registrations, i.e. Eyjafjordur is 65 and Vididalur in Reykjavik is 25.
In the listbox Iceland/FIZO/FEIF/German you choose the right type of the show you are going to register. The assessment will be calculated according to this. No calculation will be done for German assessments as they are not according to FIZO rules.
Then the personal ID-numbers of the judges are entered. The name of other employees of the show can be entered as a text.
At the bottom of the page you choose Register to save the registration. The show has now been registered and will appear on the list of this year's shows.

2. step: Enter the horse into the show

Next you choose the show from the list and there you are given the option Enter a horse in the show. The horses already register into the show will appear at the bottom of the screen.

In order to create a show register, click on Print record on all horses in the show. Now you can print the file, or use edit, select all and copy, and then paste the file into Microsoft Word.

3. step: Register the assessment

In order to register assessments, start by finding the show and then obtaining a list of all the horses in the show, select a horse and register the assessment. You can also register an assessment directly if you type in the FEIF-ID number of the horse in the field, but also you can click on Register an assessment in the line where the horse is located. Start by entering the personal ID number of the rider and then the horse's measurements. The program will comment if measurements and assessments are outside rational boundaries.

The rational boundaries for the measurements are:

Where assessments have commas, one decimal number is shown and the program automatically inserts a comma. For example, 29,5 can be entered without a comma as 295, or with the comma.

Marks are also registered with one decimal number and the program automatically inserts a comma. Thus a mark of 8,0 can be entered as 80 or simply 8. Start by registering all confirmation and rideability marks, then comments for particular marks and finally any further comments. Choose Save in order to register the assessment into WorldFengur. You can print out an assessment sheet for each assessment. You can choose either Print assessments from the show or Print extended records for all horses in the show, the later includes all pedigree information. The same method is used while creating show registers.

It is preferable to work with the information in Microsoft Word so that the list can be put in columns and tidied up. Finally, there is a lock the show option, which is only chosen after a summary show. Notice: Information cannot be changed once the lock the show option has been chosen.

We can say that the magic symbol % means: It doesn't matter what data is in this field as long as it is not empty.
It is not necessary to allocate an ID number for a person as WorldFengur takes care of it for you!
Notice that we only typed in a part of the farm name Holtsmúli. It is not necessary to fill out the name completely. If you are not using the Icelandic keyboard that can cause problems. However, you can add the Icelandic keyboard in Windows (see the Windows help) and then switch between your language and Icelandic in the status line. You can also press down the ALT key and type a special number to find the special Icelandic letters, such as á, ð, é etc. For instance "á" is ALT + 160. See table 1.
Before you register a new owner into WorldFengur you must first find out whether he isn't is already registered!
